MSc Managing the Environment

 

Full time MSc programme

 

The University of Wales Aberystwyth is pleased to announce a new Masters course tailor made for those wanting to pursue a career in the field of the environment. Students follow a series of core modules then branch out into one of three specialist pathways viz. Coastal, Estuarine & Wetlands, Habitat Restoration or Environmental Sustainability. The Environmental Sustainability pathway includes a practical module based at CAT.

Part time postgraduate opportunities

 

For sustainability enthusiasts that do not want to undertake a full MSc there is also the option to complete components of the course on a part time basis.

 

1. Certificate in Environmental Sustainability (10 MSc level credits available as an online distance learning package with supporting workshops).

The module serves as an introduction to sustainability and covers topics such as energy and climate change, waste and natural resource exploitation, pollution and legislation, biodiversity and food production. Scenarios and solutions are presented at the individual, societal and global levels, ranging from changes in behaviour to alternative energy use. Practical advice is provided to illustrate environmental sustainability in the home and workplace. The module provides excellent vocational skills which bridge the important gap between theory and practice in the environmental sciences.

2. Certificate in Practical Sustainability (30 MSc level credits involving a week of practical work at CAT).

The module begins by considering the challenges and opportunities for sustainable development in the 21st century and emphasizes the need a holistic approach to sustainability. Specific scenarios are then explored in more detail in the fields of energy and resource use. Topics include water efficiency, wastewater treatment, waste management, renewable energy, energy efficiency and carbon budgeting. Students will learn the potential and constraints of new and old technologies and be encouraged to explore innovative solutions for a greener future. The course is centred on case studies, communicative skills and a range of business scenarios. The practical component of the course utilizes the excellent displays and facilities at CAT to lead learning through experience. Students will also receive a comprehensive self study resource pack issued by UWA.

What’s new?

 

The Masters course and associated modules look rigorously at sustainability from the perspective of science, governments and society. They are accredited by the University of Wales and offer qualifications in this rapid growth area. From the outset the Institute and CAT wanted to create education that was as sustainable and flexible as possible – for example both certification programmes can be undertaken during full time employment and you can choose to study in English or Welsh. By enrolling on a course at UWA you will be partaking in an enjoyable learning experience that leads to a highly marketable qualification.
