Cut Your Carbon at the Carbon Gym

New Multimedia CD teaches how to cut Carbon Emissions and Prevent Climate Change

Contact: Amanda Roll Pickering (Email: media@cat.org.uk) Date: 05/11/2003
The Centre for Alternative Technology has produced an exciting new interactive CD that teaches children how to cut their Carbon dioxide emissions and slow Climate Change. Using a 'Carbon calculator', you can work out exactly how much Carbon dioxide your lifestyle releases.

Not only does it tell you the size of your footprint, the CD helps you locate where in your lifestyle the majority of your impacts come from. Many of us often under-estimate the things we enjoy and over estimate the impact of things we dislike.

But most importantly of all, the CD shows you, in practical terms, what you can do about it!

Climate Change is one of the most pressing issues we face. The recent government white paper on energy recommends a massive 60% reduction in Britain's carbon emissions by 2050. Unless we take serious action NOW, we will have to learn to live with extreme weather conditions, rising sea levels and tropical diseases. The Carbon Gym teaches children the science behind global warming and also to understand how their energy use has an impact on our planet.

The average person in the UK uses 10 tonnes of Carbon each year, but the fair global share is 2.5 tonnes. Cutting these emissions is a task for everyone. The Carbon Gym CD is the perfect resource for explaining the science and inspiring change.

This new interactive Carbon Gym CD is given free to participants in the kids activities that are running at CAT during school holidays. It is the latest in a range of educational resources from CAT that cover all aspects of sustainability.

Education at CAT
Many thousands of school and college students visit CAT every year. The education officers provide stimulating tuition, discussion and tours so that they can make the most of their visit (all of this has to be booked in advance). School residential visits stay in the Eco-Cabins. The education department writes publications for pupils and teachers and a day visit pack of materials to use with a visit. INSET services and courses for educationalists are also available. Send a SAE for School Visits and Educational Resources leaflets.

Eco-Cabins
Based on the CAT site, the Eco-Cabins are two self-contained residential units, offering a total of thirty-six beds. They are designed for educational groups to 'experience' living with sustainable technologies first hand. Living in close contact with their environment and with each other, they learn how to monitor and control their own electricity, fuel, wood, water supply and sewage recycling systems. A truly eye-opening experience. Send a SAE for details of residential educational visits.
