CAT experts join the Zero Carbon City project

From Genoa to Bratislava with the British Council

Contact: Amanda Roll Pickering (Email: media@cat.org.uk) Date: 10/11/2005
Members of our staff are travelling across Europe to promote practical solutions to combat climate change. Education Officer Ann MacGarry and Special Projects Officer Phil Horton are both participating in the British Council’s "Zero Carbon City".

Phil is travelling to Kosice and Bratislava where he will take part in a Café Scientifique event alongside Asher Minns of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research. Café Scientifique events provide a fun way to engage with science in a unique forum that is more relaxed, informal and accessible than a public lecture.

Ann is also speaking at a Café Scientifique in Genoa, as part of the Genoa Science Festival. Ann will be joining with Fiorello Cortiana of the Italian Senate’s Education Committee and Simone Grosso of the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Genoa.

The British Council have chosen Climate Change as the theme for 2005 as it is an issue that effects everyone. We are using the Earth's resources faster than they can regenerate themselves. If everyone lived like Western Europeans we would need three planets to provide for our needs. There are many different things that could be done to reduce our impact on the planet and its people and therefore make the world a better place.

CAT was happy to be involved with the campaign on the proviso that staff who travelled abroad for the Café Scientifique events would avoid flying. The British Council have been happy to pay the extra cost of train travel, rather than air travel as they appreciate the links between aircraft and climate change.
