What is ourplan-it.com?Created by Centre for Alternative Technology and the National Museums and Galleries of Merseyside, the exhibition 'ourplan-it.com' is both a real-life and web based experience. It aims to link the temporary exhibition gallery of the host museum to their local authority's sustainable development process. It also connects with a range of local environmental organisations, demonstrating how what we do individually relates to the global picture and how we can have an enhanced quality of life with a reduced ecological footprint. The exhibition has been run at the Museum of Liverpool, the Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood and the Warrington Museum and Gallery. It is currently available for hire to museums across the UK. Aimed primarily at 5 to 14 year olds and their families, the unique exhibition aims to help participants take a new look at what we mean by our 'environment'. We hear about it every day, but have we ever stopped to think what it really is? This exhibition uses a range of interactive techniques to shake it all up, helping us see our 'environment' and 'ourselves' as we have never seen them before! There's a lot more going on than you first think - in fact, it all begins with you! Your body is your first environment. It is a very dynamic place, there's always something going on. It may seem like your body ends at your skin, but they are constantly flowing and changing. Stomach cells are replaced in a couple of weeks, while blood cells take 2 or 3 months. Even the atoms which make up these cells are flowing in and out of our bodies all the time. It's all a bit like a river, but flowing so slowly we don't notice The exhibition then goes on to explore the home, city and global environments, and the different 'metabolisms' which occur at each level. For Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood, the exhibition has been customised to the 'metabolism' of London, linking to the Greater London Assembly's sustainable development strategies. Finally the 'Inspiration Stations' offer a virtual tour of the Centre for Alternative Technology.
