CAT Visitor Centre: Plan your visit

Children try out wind simulation machine

If you've wondered it, we've tried it. If we haven't tried it, we will.

Built in an old slate quarry in the foothills of Snowdonia our visitor centre has 7 acres of interactive displays, organic gardens, cafe, shop and adventure playground. It opened in 1974 when CAT was only a small community starting to put sustainable living to the test. Now the organisation has grown in size and reach, welcoming 50,000 visitors and school children every year, providing free information to over 200,000 people and offering postgraduate courses to 500 students each year.

Living more sustainably saves money, creates green jobs, provides a healthier lifestyle and makes sense. There are many solutions already available to tackle the issues our planet faces. Come and explore what you can do.

We are improving our site in 2010

2010 is an exciting year for CAT. In June, we will open the Welsh Institute for Sustainability and the Environment (WISE), which will host our postgraduate classes and many conferences. In the Spring, we will launch our vision for a low-carbon future for the UK, Zero Carbon Britain. Finally, we are working on creating new messages, art pieces and displays for the visitor centre, some of which you'll be able to witness during your visit. We hope that you'll share our enthusiasm and leave CAT inspired.

Entrance to the visitor centre is free until 26th March 2010
Due to construction work on the visitor circuit, we are offering free entry to all visitors until Friday 26th March 2010. Below are the areas affected until that time. Please check this page before your visit as things may change. Thank you for supporting us during through our rennovations.

Areas affected the week of March 8th - 14th:
- Transportation area (permanently closed; we are creating a new school garden!)
- Cliff Railway (annual maintenance)
- Recycling area (we're moving displays to new areas on site)
- Wind pavillion (Wednesday, 3rd March only)
- Restaurant courtyard (we are paving this space and planting new fruit trees)
- Video room (a new floor and ceiling are being installed)
Come and see our slate carver create a new centerpiece near our video room!

March 8th and 9th, the huge crane towering above our new WISE building will be removed. The only area affected will be the Woodland Walk (the path leading to our large wind turbine). If you've always been curious to see how cranes are dismantled, make sure to schedule your visit on those days!

Become a member of CAT to get in to the centre for free for a whole year and to receive our quarterly magazine Clean Slate.
