Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are extremely important to our work here at The Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT), our achievements over the last 30 years simply wouldn't have happened without the hard work, inspiration and dedication of the initial idealists who founded the centre in 1975.

Here is a photo gallery that will take you on a journey, showing you how much CAT has relied on the sweated brows and willing hands of all our volunteers over the years.

The Centre generally has opportunities for:

One week (Short Term) volunteer placements

Long Term Placements (usually 6 months)

Short Term come between March and September. Places are always oversubscribed so please apply well in advance.

Long Term Placements can stay on or off site depending on the availability of accommodation. Off site, you must sort out your own accommodation. On site, there are spaces for five volunteers.

Long Term Volunteers are usually booked some time in advance. They must be able to provide their own means of support, but we do offer meals (only lunch for off-site vols) and board (only for on site vols). Site residents take it in turn to cook, so be prepared to join the rota! LTVs are able to do two of our courses for free (subject to availability of spare places).

Ex-volunteers frequently find work locally or elsewhere. It is excellent experience to commence or refresh a career in sustainable technology and practices.

The following departments frequently need such volunteers:

Publishing - DTP/Editorial

Information - Database/research/responding to enquiries

Engineering - all sorts

Building - all sorts

Gardening - including landscaping and food preparation

Media - press relations, publicity, marketing

General Office - Database management, general office duties, customer relations

Biology - Display and experimental gardens, reedbed sewage system monitoring and maintenance and composting

Site Management - all aspects of managing and maintaining the visitor circuit, including a little bit of all disciplines. We can use most skills. Opportunity to gain NVQ level 2 in Environmental Conservation during your stay.

Please write to us with a CV, stating which departments and dates you are interested in. We are looking for people with the maximum of useful experience or skills.
