Have you ever wanted to be a wildlife presenter on T.V? Well maybe now is your chance to practice.

Why not wrap up warm and see if you can head out to find a wildlife story that you could present to family at home, send a video to a friend or even present ‘live’ over video calling.

Be curious. You don’t have to go far to find an interesting nature “scoop”. Your garden, a nearby park or even your favourite tree or hedge can be a great source of wildlife activity. If you look hard enough you never know what you might spot.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

  • Camera (or phone camera) and a notebook
  • Photos, videos or even sketches of the nature you’ve seen
  • Your presenter script (fill in your presenter script below to help you on-camera.)
  • A comfy “studio” set to “broadcast” from– this could be your own sofa but maybe get creative with decorations like fallen leaves, carved pumpkins and a cosy blanket.
  • An adult to help you record your video and/or set up video calling with your friends and family.

Presenter Script

Below is a “presenter script” to help you know what to say. Fill this in using your wildlife findings, or have fun making up your own.

Hi my name is _____________________.

I’ve been exploring wildlife in my _______________________________ and I’ve seen__________________________________.

I saw the __________________ in (circle or add habitat) garden / woodland / pond / hedgerow / tree / park / ______________________ habitat.

What I noticed was – tell the main story about the wildlife you found. Could you include facts?

______________________________________________________________________________________________.

Nature is important to me because

______________________________________________________________________________________________.

Being in nature makes me feel

______________________________________________________________________________________________.

My favourite thing about spring is

____________________________________________________________________________________________.

Let’s see what we’ve caught on our wildlife camera today. You could use your own footage for this. Hold up your phone or show your footage on a screen near you.

Be a wildlife presenter – step by step

1. Find your story

Making sure that you stick to the Covid-19 advice for your area can you head outside to find your story?

Wrap up warm, take a camera (or phone with a camera) and maybe a notebook to record any extra information. You may also need to take your “crew” (your family) with you. Use your sense of sight, smell, hearing and touch to carefully hunt out your story.

If you can’t go out, what can you spot from your window? Wildlife live all around us so get comfy by a window and see what or who you can spot.

When you’ve got your story you can fill out your “presenter script” to help you know what to say when your big moment comes.

2. Be curious

Every living thing plays an important role in our natural eco-systems, so record everything that you notice and bring your findings back to show on-camera!

3. Dress your set

Back at home it could be fun to dress your set ready for your “live” broadcast. Decide where you would like to present from, a sofa or comfy chair maybe? Could you decorate your set with fallen leaves, printed pictures of UK wildlife or other nature-related items? You could make your set look like a cosy wildlife basecamp or perhaps a high-tech studio suite.

4. Gather your crew

You will probably need a bit of help filming your story so ask an adult for help setting up a camera or video call.

5. Go live

Whether you’re presenting to your family at home, making a video to send round to friends or going “live” over video call, have your script and any props, photos or video clips you want to use ready.

Take a deep breath and go for it. I’m sure your broadcast will inspire your friends to have a go themselves.

If you’re making a video make sure to film it in landscape.

6. Share with us

We would love to see your video broadcasts and even the footage you’ve gathered. Ask an adult to share with us through our social media.
