A detailed look at powering up clean energy supplies with wind, water and solar.
Join students from CAT’s Graduate School of the Environment for an in-depth look at how energy is provided and what changes could be made to improve its environmental impact. Investigate different technologies, looking at how they work, weighing up the advantages and disadvantages, and exploring the policy mechanisms that could help support their deployment.

What you will learn
Join students on CAT’s MSc Sustainability in Energy Provision and Demand Management to learn about energy supplies that could help tackle climate change.
Explore the technological aspects and practical considerations of different technologies for reducing energy demand and providing more energy via sustainable sources.
Investigate resource potential (and limitations), maintenance needs, associated carbon emissions and the environmental impacts of the available renewable energy technologies.
During this week-long course you will get to grips with:
- Solar thermal
- Heat Pumps
- District heating
- Hydroelectric (including marine)
- Biomass and biofuels
You’ll also look at the technological, economic and environmental considerations related to other technologies, such as nuclear energy and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).
Distribution (e.g. the national grid) and storage options (such as batteries and pumped water storage), including their future potential, will be explored.
The course is taught through a mixture of lectures, seminars, practical workshops, presentations and demonstrations, with an active exchange of views and opinions encouraged throughout.
Joining this module as a short course offers networking opportunities and enables you to become part of the wider network of postgraduate students working in the field of sustainability.
