Join our MSc students for the second part of this course, and understand the relationship between the design of a building and the way we experience them.

Key Information

  • Duration: five days
  • Mon 6th – Fri 10th January 2020
  • Start and finish times: starts 11am on the first day and ends at 4pm on the last day
  • Fee: Waged £750, Low Waged / Concessions £700
  • Includes: tuition, all materials, full board share accommodation
  • What to bring: due to the nature of this course some practical work will be done outside. We strongly advise you to bring waterproof clothing and steel toe-cap boots are mandatory
  • Terms and Conditions: You must be over the age of 18 years when this course starts.

What you will learn

Looking at the way that energy flows around a building can alter the way we design and retrofit the buildings we live in.

During this week long course, you will learn how to develop and design the best energy systems for any building, guided by climate change adaptation and the principles of sustainability.

You will gain a sound appreciation of how the energy transfers in buildings may be manually calculated, modelled and simulated in computer modelling suites and how this is vital to optimise the design for energy efficiency.

You will learn about:

  • Passive approaches to sunlight and solar gain

  • Energy and Mass flows in Buildings
  • Energy Saving in buildings
  • Principles of lighting
  • Movement of moisture in building fabric
  • Relative humidity, internal moisture control and moisture buffering
  • Computer simulation of thermal and hygroscopic building performance
  • Low and zero carbon buildings, including Passivhaus
  • Refurbishment

You do not need to have attended the short course Part A to attend Part B.

This course is ideal if you are interested in further post graduate study at CAT, want to learn how to critically evaluate a building’s design or proposed renovations in providing occupant comfort, energy efficiency, potential for rot and decay, wider environmental impacts and resilience to climate change.

Tutor profiles

Module Leader: Frances Hill

With a background in physics, and a PhD in Environmental Engineering, Frances lectures on heat transfers in buildings, and on renewable energy provision. She also teaches study skills including data analysis.
