What you will learn
For this course you will be joining a module of CAT’s MSc Sustainability and Adaptation as you gain an overview of the research and debates around adaptation planning and the sustainability of cities and communities in the context of environmental change.
You will gain a thorough understanding of key elements that underlie the development and management of communities and cities, including infrastructure, maintenance issues, energy budgets, material flows, waste disposal, transportation and social dynamics.
During the course you will critically assess the complex factors that influence sustainability and adaptation planning within urban and community-focused environments, and you will learn to recognise and rationalise the prospects for innovative research and practice to enable city and community regeneration.
Key topics of study:
- How cities and communities will be influenced by the challenges and opportunities brought about by the need to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
- The qualities and purposes of community spaces as part of the cultural urban landscape will be reframed from a sustainability and adaptation planning perspective.
- Environmental impacts, sustainability and adaptation issues facing the built environment will be analysed, looking at the demand for materials, energy, infrastructure, maintenance and transportation.
- Specific phenomena of cities (e.g. urban heat islands and biodiversity planning) will be considered, along with the urban regeneration and transformations required to address them as the climate changes.
- The urban and community form will be analysed for the potential design, social structure and behaviour changes required under an ethos of sustainability and adaptation.
- Current status of urban and community statutory development control and planning, enforcement of sustainable practices and key environmental legislation and compliance measures will be looked at, as well as community-based initiatives and grassroots strategies.
